With Enzo Amore being released from WWE, newly appointed 205 Live GM Drake Maverick made an announcement last month that there would be a 16 man single elimination tournament to crown a new Cruiserweight Champion with the final match being held at Wrestlemania 34. The first round of the tournament would culminate on tonight's episode of 205 Live.

The Opening Match

In the first match of the night, former NXT tag team champion Buddy Murphy would make his 205 Live debut against Ariya Daivari. The Persian Lion would gain the upper hand early on in the match by focusing on the back of Murphy. After dropping his opponent on the ring apron and throwing him into the steel steps, Daivari would continue to apply pressure with speed and counter moves. Murphy would eventually turn the tables and defeat Daivari after executing a pump handle Death Valley Driver. Buddy Murphy has clearly put the 205 Live roster on notice as he advanced to the second round of the tournament.

The Mid Card Match

The mid card match would have Lince Dorado teaming with Gran Matilik going against Evan Daniels and Corazon Delgado. The two Lucha superstars would be accompanied to the ring by Kalisto who picked up a win over Lince Dorado to advance to the second round of the Tournament. The fast pace of Dorado and Matilik would allow them to dominate the match before Dorado would land a shooting star press to end the match.

The Main Event

The last match of the night and the final match of the first round of the tournament would pit Mustafa Ali against Gentleman Jack Gallagher. After being instructed by GM Drake Maverick to ditch his suit for more appropriate ring gear, Gallagher would follow the bosses orders and wear what appeared to be green velvet wrestling tights. I would have rather him go back to his old attire but this clearly is a new more aggressive Jack Gallagher. I personally am a fan of the heel gimmick that Jack has adopted, his unorthodox style in the ring paired with his bad boy attitude seem to fit nicely together. The high flyer Ali would struggle in the match after having both of his arms strategically attacked throughout the match. With one arm Ali would go on to hit his signature 0-5-4 and pick a pin fall victory.

Coming up next on 205 Live...
